The Event The National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA) was held from April 28 to the 30th this year at the McCormick Place West Hall in the Chicago, IL area. This trade show is the industry standard for new technology and events related to the market of vending machines. NAMA president and CEO, Richard M. Geerdes highlighted the advances on the vending machine front. His chief announcement was a cashless payment program, available to members starting June 1st. With the production of intelligent thermostats, company Elstat Americas (Marietta, Georgia) was prized for this energy efficient innovation. The intelligent thermostat is used in a wide range of refrigeration units, and vending machines. Additional state of the art vending technology was spotlighted at the show. Technologies that were spotlighted at the event include cashless payment systems, LED displays, and touch screen displays. Special keynote speakers showed different sides of leadership to the vending machine audience. Former chief executive of Godfather's Pizza, Herman Cain gave a speech title "Leadership is Common Sense," making the way managers go about business the utmost importance in terms of results and employees success. Prized television newscaster Ted Koppel discussed "Dangerous Times, Dangerous World," a speech about current events, from taxes to terrorism; how current events will affect, possibly, the nation's future. Dr. Michael Kasavana, a professor at Michigan State University, and also a recognized NAMA figure, gave a two-part speech titled "The Future of Vending technology." Other speeches highlighted the food-service industry, coffee talks, and equipment sales. Others included merchandising talk, and featured round-tables of vending industry leaders.
