Soft Drink Vending Machine - The Soft Drink Tax and You

A primary topic for even a potential soft drink vending machine owner is the inclusion of a tax on soft drinks. This would affect the industry in various ways.

The Soft Drink Tax Scope

It can be said that the implementation of a soft drink tax is a top issue nationwide. Recently, the attention towards soft drinks in general has been mixed, at best. The increasing national concern of how full-sugar soft drinks affect the health of the consumer has put soft drinks under a sort of imposition.

Reports by the American Heart Association that link sugary soft drinks, and other beverages to conditions such as diabetes, and obesity, has not put the beverage companies in the best light. As well, the national attention towards obesity, and debate in Washington DC, has also shown some anxiety in the area of sugary soft drinks.

The Soft Drink Tax - Areas Affected

Some of the localities that are proposing the tax on soft drinks are New York, and Kansas. Products that would be tax would include sugary soft drinks, sport drinks, and some juices.

In particular, Kansas could propose a soft drink tax for "every teaspoon of sugar" added to soft drinks. And for every teaspoon, they would have a penny tax. In response to this, a council called the Kansans Against Food and Beverage Taxes, was formed to combat the proposed soft drink tax.

Whether people are for, or against the soft drink tax, there are several reasons why it seems unfair to do so. For one, a soft drink tax is unfair to everyone, and more unfair to those who have less means to afford it. However, this is not a strong argument.

The Argument

A stronger argument could made that soft drinks are enjoyed as additional "comforts," and that a proposed soft drink tax would only be implemented to line the pockets of state governments, not decrease the rates of obesity, unless the tax was so high that no one could afford to buy soft drinks.

A more generalized philosophy comes from the argument that soft drinks cause obesity. If something has factors that cause obesity, why not just tax it? This sounds a bit crazy, and essentially that is what a proposed soft drink tax is recommending.

Overall, soft drink companies are actually working to promote healthier attitudes across the board; working with campaigns and groups such as the American Heart Association.

Whether or not politics are involved, one thing is certain. It might not be as simple cutting down on the amount of sugary soft drinks you, or the family consumes, but it could help.

Soft Drinks - Boom in Sales?

While the soft drink industry has reported a general 3% decline in sugary soft drink sales nationwide, other areas are taking up the slack. And as many soft drink companies work to advocate healthier attitudes, and sugary soft drink alternatives, sales are improving.

Overall, the sales for the soft drink industry are recovering as people advocate "healthier attitudes" instead of putting all the blame on sugary soft drinks.

Whether it is diet soft drinks, fruit juices, or naturally sweetened beverages, now is a great time to invest in a soft drink vending machine. People are becoming much more aware of what is out there in terms of sugary soft drink alternatives, and this motivation could drive sales at a soft drink vending machine.
