Further consensus related by PepsiCo because of the health care bill and national attention focuses on healthy alternatives to snacks. The company has additionally focused on the reduction of sugar, bad-for-you fats and the amount of salt in their products. As well, due to this shift in popularity and overall attention, it is a good time to invest in a snack vending machine capable of serving up healthy snack alternatives, to consumers. Products in a snack vending machine such as vegetarian, organic, natural or other whole snack foods are becoming a very popular addition to a vending machine business and to consumer buying power, as well. In response to that, PepsiCo has announced an overall reduction in sodium content in some of their snacks, which is particularly due to a "designer salt" created by a parent company, Frito-Lay.
The concept of a designer salt is simple, create a salt still capable of flavor-boosting potential, but with less overall sodium intake. With a recent announcement by PepsiCo and Frito-Lay, this idea has come into fruition. In the upcoming years, the sodium levels for various snacks will be reduced by 25% percent, by 2015. As well, saturated fats, and added sugars will be reduced by 15% and 25% percent.
How was the designer salt made? Food scientists at Frito-Lay created this designer salt, after a thorough research project on the different shapes and sizes of salt crystals. What they found was that some shapes and sizes lent themselves better to being dissolved more efficiently on the tongue. With normal salt, about 80% percent of the salt is swallowed instead of being tasted. With the new designer salt, a "salt curve" is created, the same amount of salt is tasted on the tongue, but fewer of it is swallowed, due to the shape and size of the new salt crystals.
By gradually implementing changes to their soda and snack products throughout the upcoming years, PepsiCo has shown that national focus on healthy snack and soda alternatives also calls for change at the manufacturing and researching level. At the same time, sales figures continually rise for sodas and snacks, and PepsiCo has made strives to meet demand, but also to keep it better for the consumer.
Essentially what this means for the vending industry is that snack and soda manufacturers are implementing new models for delivery of their products. As well, they are paying distinct attention to what national consensus is, and how consumer demand could be affected.
A snack vending machine from United Marketing that is capable of serving up these snack alternatives, could highlight the fact that while consumer choice is changing somewhat, popularity and profit growth will be shown in these changes.
