The main health issue with shift-work disorder is the disruption of the body's circadian rhythm; the process that controls our sleep schedule.
When the circadian rhythm of a person is disrupted, the result will be a marked level of drowsiness throughout the day. Although the worker will be able to stay on the job, they will have a reduced level of cognitive performance; as the body tells the person to sleep, yet they cannot. Think of it like an improved conscious state of sleepwalking.
The report suggests that workers who lack the quality levels of sleep required to maintain a marked level of alertness can benefit from the addition of caffeine in their diets.
 This review commented that the workers received the caffeine from numerous sources, including coffee, energy drinks, food or pills. A "before and after test" took place, which had gauged the study group on the levels of memory, attention, reasoning and perception skills. The reviewed concluded that caffeine had helped workers improve their cognitive performance, which could lead to a reduction of job-related errors.
Perhaps part of this is why energy drinks, and coffee products have remained relatively popular throughout the past couple years. Energy drinks especially have enjoyed a marked increase of popularity and growth, following their attractive label design and "pumped up" energy punch.
