 PepsiCo Inc. has pledge support to remove all of its sugar-laden soft drinks in schools, in over 200 countries in the world, by 2012. As the focus changes from sugary soft drinks, to diet soda, now could be a good time to invest in a drink vending machine. Debate like this will fuel sales of non-sugar markets in the soda industry. In addition, the company announced this as discussion was taking place over First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign, which called for less fat, and sugar in foods that were marketed towards children.
PepsiCo Inc. the second largest soft drink producer, and Coca-Cola Co., the largest, now have rules in place to limit sugar soda to children in schools. As well, the World Heart Federation had been challenging soda producers to get rid of the sugar-laden soft drinks in schools.
Coca-Cola recently announced changes to their global policy, saying they would not sell any soft drinks to primary schools, globally, unless the specific district asked.
While secondary schools are not affected, Coca-Cola said that schools do have the choice to decide what is best for their schools. As well, in primary schools PepsiCo announced that it would only sell water, fat-free or low-fat milk and juice (all with no added sugar). This policy will require working with the bottlers, vending companies and distributors who stock school's soft drinks primarily.
In addition, the American Beverage Association reported last week that the sales of full calorie soft drinks in schools fell to 95% in the United States, between 2004 and 2009.
While the debate continues around the efficacy of these plans, and of other childhood obesity related issues in schools, now could be a good time to think about an investment in a drink vending machine.
