Better For All: Vending Industry Steps Up To Address Public Dietary Concerns
Today's nutrition-minded consumers are scrutinizing labels on packaged goods. They're also paying closer attention to calorie counts on chain restaurant menu boards nationwide, displayed under requirements included in the Obama administration's healthcare reform law. Still to come are the anxiously awaited federal nutrition labeling rules that must be followed by operators of 20 or more vending machines, as part of the same law. The Food and Drug Administration, which was given the responsibility for drawing up those rules, has said that it intends to publish them during the 2013 calendar year, although there is no mandated deadline. Still, many operators and suppliers alike are taking a proactive approach to satisfy the expectations of customers who have access to increased nutrition information in many other places where they shop and dine.

Vending Machine Success In Boosting School Meal Participation
The widespread underuse of the federally funded free school breakfast program has received a good deal of recent news coverage. Star Foods here reports that a recent study found that 21 million low-income students who could receive a free school breakfast (and lunch) do not, and that one in five children come to school hungry. Research repeatedly has shown that eating breakfast has a very positive effect on a child's performance in school. And hungry children are 31% more likely to be hospitalized, according to a report published by Share Our Strength, in partnership with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.

The Coca-Cola group has seen the light, at least with the value and popularity of Dr Pepper. The company has reached a deal with the Dr Pepper Snapple Group Inc., to distribute some of its soda brands. We've said that Dr Pepper is a hot-seller this year, and now Coca-Cola agrees!
